What are the benefits and negatives of irrigation in ancient Mesopotamia?

This question isn’t centered around the practice of irrigation, but more around the rivers they used in general (the Tigris and the Euphrates). Mesopotamians benefited from using the rivers for irrigation because it enabled them to cultivate plenty of food in an area otherwise surrounded by deserts. A negative of this was that harsh flooding would occur and cause quite a bit of damage (which is why the Meospotamians built tall walls around their city).
